World famous Italian desserts

ice-creamItalian desserts are famous all over the world - at least this is NOT only our opinions but attested to by millions who order tiramisu at restaurants or never refuse a serving of Italian ice-cream. At our Italian food section we talk about our pasticceria shops lining many streets in Turin city or in smaller towns. There are also plenty of Italian Gelateria (ice-cream shops) scattered around too. One of our favorite Gelateris is GROM, if you had a chance to pass by a GROM Gelateria you must try their specialty - Crema di GROM. Often you will find a long queue, it is well worth your wait.

Back to those pasticceria shops. WARNING DO NOT look into their window display! If you do, you can kiss your diet plan out of the window!! You will be drawn into sampling of the goodies your eyes are feasting on.

TYPES OF ITALIAN DESSERTS

  1. Cookies and biscotti - yes they call these desserts too. My husband loves to have biscotti in the morning with his coffee while I would prefer to settle with my eggs. I am not into biscotti as they are hard. Rich butter cookies are favorites here.
  2. Pastry based - cannoli and cassata are the two most common. Cannoli is filled with sweetened ricotta and come rolled. Sometimes they have candied fruits and chocolate pieces mixed in too. Cassata is a round sponge cake soaked in rum or liqueur and filled with ricotta sometimes yes they mixed in candied fruit peels, pistachios and chocolate bits as well. There also varieties of pies hazelnut pie is one of Piedmont Italy specialty.
  3. Custard-style - we are sure you must have tried this tiramisu is one such example. Made from soaking savoiardi biscuits in espresso sometimes they include liquor and layered with soft cheese (mascarpone). Always serve cold. There's also Zabaglione simple ingredients egg yolks, sugar and dessert wine and most people like it topped with whipped cream.
  4. Confections - for those with really sweet tooth then its torrone. A nougat really. Very hard, very sweet it has nuts, honey, egg white, they are pretty pricey. Chocolate in all flavors, sizes and shapes plain ones, creamy ones, nuts mixed, liqueur - you name it they make them in chocolates. Easter is the best time chocolates are everywhere. It seems you have to buy one. A worldwide chocolate sensation is Nutella a chocolate and hazelnut spread.
  5. Ice-cream and sorbets - too many flavors to choose from. Personally I prefer Italian ice-cream because they are richer in texture.
