Year 2008 Turin was the host for World Design Capital. This is held once every 2 years with the objective to showcase work that has improve social, cultural and economics of life. It is a year long exhibition with design-related events taking place in key traffic places. Hosting this event places Turin on the map as being one of the world acknowledged leader in design education.
Mountains surrounding Turin has provided us with fantastic destination for winter sports. Winter sports for us was further enhanced when Turin hosted the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
On 6 June 2009 Turin hosted the World Air Games this is in the field of aviation. Only the best of the best are invited to compete in this event, there are 10 air sports and up to 22 different events.
Turin is also famous for its Annual Turin International Book Fair held in mid-May. Every year crowd numbering more than 300,000 visitors come visit the fair. All of the famous publishers are represented. Italy is one of the best place in the world for printing products. If you ever need to buy a present for an Italian friend, you cannot go wrong in choosing a book. Almost every Italian home has a fine library.
For night life Turin promises to be the most exciting in the whole of Italy. We are known to have the most bars and clubs per sq. mile. Taking an evening stroll through the city you will see many establishments opening to cater to night crawlers. One of the our most exciting spot is Quandrilatero Romano. Some places closes as late as 4 a.m.
In sports we have our famous football team Turin's Juventus. Our understanding is that they have over 100 million fans worldwide who worship them.
THINGS YOU MUST DO WHEN IN TURIN
- Visit Egyptian Museum, Reggia di Venaria, Automobile Museum, Museum of Oriental Arts (MAO) and a few other museums if you have more time. Museums are time-consuming ventures.
- Savor Piedmont cuisines at our historical resturants or farm-dining which requires more time to drive out to the countryside.
- Stroll through our city center - walk under our archades - admire the buildings and shops along the way. Story has it that they were built for the convenience of the aristocrats so that they won't have to get wet in the rain or too hot under the sun.
- Italian aperitivo hour you must try. Step into any bars between the hours of 19:00 hrs to 21:00 hrs for €5 to €10 per person you may enjoy a wide platter of finger foods and a drink. For some this is a meal in itself.
- For chocolate lovers you should head to Piazza della Consolata
look for Al Bicerin established since 1763 and try a cup of bicerin which is a blend of coffee and chocolate topped with whip cream. You should also buy Gianduiotto a lusciously creamy, hazelnut-flavored chocolate a specialty of Piedmont Italy. - Visit wine cellars to taste Piedmont Italy range of wine. You must try our Asti spumante wine which is one of our region best.
- Visit our numerous palaces notably Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Madama and Villa della Regina admire their outstanding architeture designs as well as the garden that surrounds them.
- Visit an open market buy some cold cuts (affettati) salami being one of Italian delights. You will find many types to choose from at reasonable prices.
- Visit flea market if you happen to be here on a weekend, who knows you may be able to buy a priceless work of art.
- Our bookshops are stocked with incredible range of Coffee table books. Some you may have difficulties getting back home.
- Try Italian ice-cream, have a cup of Italian espresso, hot chocolate or our unique blend call bicerin - special preparation made with chocolate and coffee topped with whip cream.
Take a good book and head for any of our parks. Valentino Park is in the city center. This will give you a chance to do some people-watching too.- For the love of books you can stroll through bookstalls sheltered under Via Po strolling through right up to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
- You should not go home until you have visited Turin's landmark Mole Antonelliana a dramatically tapered buidling that houses the National Museum of Cinema. Taking the lift to the top will give you a view across Turin city rooftops and our magnificent mountain peaks.
